Established Dec. 7, 1776 in the throes of the Revolutionary War, Washington County was named for Gen. George Washington. Its county seat, Abingdon, features a 20-block historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes the world-famous Barter Theater, Virginia's state theater.
